About Catlett Hematology Advisory Services

Joseph P. Catlett, MD, FACP is the Founding and Managing Member of Catlett Hematology Advisory Services (CHAS) with over 30 years of experience in the research, diagnosis, and treatment of both benign and malignant hematologic disorders.

After a residency in internal medicine at West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc., he completed both a clinical and research fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia.  This included research involving normal stem cells and myeloid leukemia in the Bone Marrow Transplantation Laboratory under the auspices of Steven Grant, MD and Thomas Huff, PhD.

Following fellowship, he spent two years at the U. S. FDA as a Medical Officer in the Division of Oncology Drug Products, reviewing both Investigational New Drug (IND) applications and New Drug Applications (NDA’s).

After completing this assignment, Dr. Catlett joined the faculty at Medstar Washington Hospital Center, the largest teaching hospital in the District of Columbia.  He spent nearly twenty-eight years of his career teaching and mentoring medical students from Georgetown University, George Washington University and Howard University; internal medicine residents; and hematology/oncology fellows. 

While at Medstar, he was the site Principal Investigator for numerous clinical trials involving multiple myeloma, acute leukemia, and myelodysplastic syndromes. He has also served on the Institutional Review Board, the Transfusion Committee and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

He has published numerous original research papers in peer-reviewed journals including Blood, Leukemia and Lymphoma, Annals of Internal Medicine, European Journal of Hematology and The British Journal of Hematology.

He is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology, and hematology.

Dr. Catlett is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a long-time member of both the American Society of Hematology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
